COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Animation Production course at Arts University Bournemouth offers a structured, progressive learning experience across three years, building foundational skills and advancing toward professional practice. In the first year, students are introduced to the core principles of animation through workshops, lectures, and seminars. Emphasis is placed on mastering the 12 Principles of Animation using traditional 2D animation techniques and industry-standard software. Students also develop skills in layout and background design, sketching, character performance, and cinematic storytelling, while exploring critical theories and the historical and contemporary context of animation.In the second year, students deepen their expertise and begin to define their roles within animation production. Working collaboratively on team-based projects, they gain experience in every stage of animation—from concept development to post-production. Technical skills in 2D, CGI, and stop-motion are further developed alongside drawing and painting abilities. Students also begin planning their own personal projects and participate in a pitching process modeled on industry standards. This year also allows for valuable industry experience or international study opportunities, with the option to undertake a work placement.By the third year, students are expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to both individual growth and collaborative production. Each student identifies a specialist role—such as animator, designer, or director—and contributes to a full 2D, CGI, or stop-motion film project. Communication, teamwork, and mentorship play key roles during this stage. Students refine their craft through advanced theoretical and practical exploration, while also developing professional strategies for self-promotion and career planning. A major component of the final year is the opportunity to pitch a story idea and participate in the selection process for final film productions. By graduation, students will have created a comprehensive portfolio and gained real-world experience reflective of industry practice.
