COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Acting course at Arts University Bournemouth offers a comprehensive and structured progression over three years. In the first year, students begin by exploring the connection between the performer’s body and voice through core training in acting, movement, voice, and singing. They engage with both text and non-text sources to create authentic characters and start developing performances for specific audiences. Collaboration with Film Production students introduces them to media performance, while employability, research skills, and cultural awareness are also embedded to support their academic and professional development. Key skills such as self-reflection, analysis, and peer assessment are introduced.In the second year, students build on their foundational skills and delve deeper into acting, movement, and vocal work through both classical and contemporary material, including Shakespeare. They gain experience in workshop and performance settings and begin developing original work through devising, dramaturgy, and collaboration. This year emphasizes performance in non-traditional and community contexts and introduces advanced vocal techniques for audio media. Students also explore a specialist subject of interest to deepen critical and theoretical understanding while beginning to shape their professional identity and portfolio, with guidance on future career and postgraduate opportunities.By the third year, students apply their training in a variety of creative challenges, including ensemble performances and solo projects. They collaborate with Bournemouth Film School on full-scale productions and create original theatrical works for public audiences. Industry readiness is strengthened through workshops and talks on producing, budgeting, and professional practice. Students benefit from networking opportunities with industry professionals and gain insights into the business side of performance, including the chance to join Spotlight Graduate. They leave the course with a refined digital portfolio and a clear understanding of their personal brand, fully equipped to pursue a successful career in the performing arts.
