COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Pastoral Theology, offered through the Cambridge Theological Federation and accredited by ARU, combines core modules with a wide range of optional choices to provide both structure and flexibility in exploring chaplaincy and pastoral care. Core elements include Models of Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care, which introduces different approaches to pastoral practice, and a Pastoral Placement that allows students to apply their learning in real-world contexts. The course culminates in a Major Project (dissertation), offering the opportunity to conduct in-depth independent research on a topic of personal and professional interest. In addition to these core studies, students choose three optional modules to tailor the program to their own vocational and academic goals. Options cover a diverse range of themes, including children’s spirituality, pastoral supervision, Christian spirituality in the contemporary world, spirituality and the body, Wesleyan spirituality, ethics in professional contexts, and interfaith relations. Further options allow students to engage with topics such as moral development and reasoning, theology and mission, or the dialogue between theology and science. This combination of practical placement, core theoretical grounding, and personalised optional modules ensures students develop both critical understanding and applied skills for effective chaplaincy and pastoral practice across diverse contexts.
