COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Animal Welfare and Conservation at ARU Writtle combines academic study with practical experience to provide a comprehensive understanding of animal welfare, behaviour, nutrition, genetics, and conservation. The course features nine core modules delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials, visits, and supervised self-guided learning, allowing students to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills under the guidance of experienced staff from the Centre of Equine and Animal Science. Students explore key topics such as conservation genetics, nutritional issues, wildlife resources, animal behaviour, ethics and welfare, and habitat conservation, preparing them for careers in research, conservation, and applied animal management. A central component of the program is the dissertation research project, which involves hands-on experimentation and data analysis, supervised by academic staff, and can be undertaken on campus or at an approved external institution. Assessment methods are varied, including written examinations, reports, essays, presentations, debates, case studies, and the dissertation, providing multiple opportunities to demonstrate knowledge, critical thinking, and research capabilities. Through this combination of practical and academic learning, students develop the skills and expertise required to contribute effectively to the study, care, and conservation of animals, while gaining experience that enhances their career prospects in animal welfare and conservation-related fields.
