COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Graphic Design at ARU combines lectures, practical workshops, group discussions, one-to-one tutorials, reflective discussion groups, guest lectures, and excursions to provide an immersive studio and practice-based learning experience. Students develop and execute individual projects while also engaging in team-based projects that simulate real-world professional settings. Core modules such as Typographic Enquiry and Visual Text focus on enhancing creative design practice, while Design Methods and Contexts supports advanced project building and development skills. The Practice Through Partnership module provides direct engagement with socio-environmental issues in institutional contexts, allowing students to apply their learning to real-world briefs, experience professional structures, and receive validated feedback from external partners, providing valuable work experience. The Masters Project serves as the culmination of the course, challenging students to propose, develop, implement, and present an independent project that addresses visual communication solutions for socio-environmental problems while demonstrating innovation and autonomy. All modules integrate research methods, contextualisation, and critical reflection, with visual research central to discipline-specific work and design research essential for live projects. Assessment methods mirror professional practice, including co-created assessment criteria, self-assessment, formative feedback, and oral presentations, enabling students to engage with evaluation as part of skill development and professional growth rather than solely as a measure of completion, preparing them for impactful careers in socially and environmentally aware design.
