COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL Masters course at ARU Cambridge provides an in-depth exploration of second language learning and teaching, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application. A core module on Second Language Acquisition examines major themes and research findings in the field, encouraging students to reflect on their own language learning and teaching experiences to assess different approaches. Classroom Theory and Practice complements this by offering insights into modern classroom operations, along with opportunities to observe teachers in action, helping students connect theory to real-world practice. The course also includes a Major Project, allowing students to research and develop an in-depth study on a topic of personal and professional interest, culminating in a 15,000-word dissertation. Students can choose from a range of optional modules, selecting 30 credits each from areas such as Materials and Course Design, Language, Communication, Identity, Beyond Borders, Intercultural Consultancy Project, Postgraduate Research Methods, Communication and Conflict, and Teacher Development and Management. Assessment methods are varied and designed to evaluate both theoretical understanding and practical application, including portfolios, classroom observation tasks, and critical essays. Overall, this course equips students with the skills, knowledge, and research expertise to advance their careers in English language teaching, curriculum design, intercultural consultancy, and leadership roles within TESOL and applied linguistics contexts worldwide.
