COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ecology and Conservation degree is structured to provide a strong foundation in biological sciences, progressing to advanced ecological and conservation topics. In Year 1, students study Animal Physiology and Behaviour, Introduction to Ecology and Conservation, Principles of Biology, and Quantitative Techniques for Biologists, alongside professional development and the Into ARU program. Year 2 builds on this with modules such as Invertebrate Biology, Principles of Genetics and Evolution, Aquatic Biology and Conservation, Marine and Terrestrial Communities, and GIS and Spatial Ecology. Practical skills are developed through Biological Research Skills and Field Skills in Biology, with further enhancement via the Ruskin Module and professional development activities. In Year 3, the focus shifts to applying knowledge in specialised areas, including Population Ecology and Wildlife Management, Current Topics in Marine Biology, Wildlife Conservation, and Sustainable Land Management. Students also undertake the Undergraduate Major Project, allowing them to conduct independent research. Optional modules such as Behavioural Ecology, Biogeography, and Tropical Ecology and Management offer opportunities to tailor studies to specific interests. Throughout the course, fieldwork, lab work, and technical training equip graduates with the scientific expertise and practical abilities needed for careers in conservation, ecological research, and environmental management.
