COURSE CURRICULUM

This biology degree provides a broad and in-depth understanding of life sciences, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules in Principles of Biology, Mathematics for the Biosciences, General Microbiology, Animal Physiology and Behaviour, and Introduction to Ecology and Conservation, alongside continuing professional development activities. The second year advances into Principles of Genetics, preparation for research, and the Ruskin Module, while offering a range of specialised options such as Vertebrate or Invertebrate Biology, Plants and Microbial Sciences, DNA manipulation, bioinformatics, field skills, animal health, GIS, and proteomics. These modules are designed to develop both laboratory and analytical expertise. In the final year, students undertake an Undergraduate Project, exploring an area of personal interest in depth, while studying core topics such as Developmental Biology and Genetics, and Policy, Globalisation, and Economics of Sustainability. Optional modules cover advanced themes like biogeography, ecophysiology, human-animal interactions, microbial pathogenicity, molecular cell biology, bioinformatics, plant and microbial sciences, biodiversity, and systems biology. By combining scientific theory, research skills, and applied field and lab techniques, the course prepares graduates for diverse careers in research, conservation, biotechnology, or further academic study in the biological sciences.
