COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Animal Management (Pet Behaviour and Welfare) degree is structured to progressively develop scientific knowledge, practical skills and professional competence across three years of study. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation in biology, ecology and evolution, alongside key themes such as ethics of animal use, human–animal interaction and professional wellbeing. These modules introduce the biological and ethical principles that underpin responsible animal management. Year 2 develops deeper understanding of animal behaviour, nutrition, breeding, health and welfare, supported by research methods and professional practice. Students also study legislation and applied behaviour and training, ensuring they understand both scientific and regulatory aspects of animal care. The Ruskin Module broadens perspectives on social responsibility and citizenship. In Year 3, students focus on advanced and applied topics, including clinical animal behaviour, applied nutrition, animal welfare and breeding strategies. A Major Project allows independent investigation into a specialist area, developing research, analysis and professional reporting skills. Modules on people management and developing clinical practice prepare students for real-world professional roles. Together, the curriculum offers a comprehensive blend of theory, practical application and professional development, preparing graduates for careers in pet behaviour, welfare, training, animal care management and related roles within the companion animal sector.
