COURSE CURRICULUM

The Working with Children, Families and Communities degree provides a comprehensive understanding of child development, social work practice, and community engagement, preparing students to support children and families in a variety of settings. In the first year, students develop critical skills for higher education and explore childhood as a construct, focusing on physical and social development. They also examine contemporary issues in social work and safeguarding, building a foundation in ethical and professional practice. In the second year, the course delves deeper into childhood cognitive and language development while emphasizing reflective practice and interprofessional collaboration. Students learn to study and apply research in practical contexts and gain the ability to identify and respond to community needs, enhancing their problem-solving and analytical skills. In the final year, students focus on sustainable social work practices and inclusive approaches to working with children, including special educational needs and developmental difficulties. They complete a special focus project and engage directly with communities, applying their knowledge to real-world challenges and developing practical experience. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on critical reflection, ethical practice, and professional development, ensuring graduates are equipped to make meaningful contributions to the wellbeing of children, families, and communities across diverse social contexts.
