COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy degree at ARU provides a comprehensive exploration of fundamental questions and ideas that have shaped human thought across history. In the first year, students engage with core concepts such as happiness, the good life, major philosophical questions, and world religions, establishing a strong foundation in philosophical inquiry. In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced topics, including ethics, the works of Kant and the empiricists, mind and consciousness, and the philosophy of art, while also offering opportunities for professional placements and skill development through the Ruskin and Anglia Language modules. Students develop critical thinking, reasoning, and analytical skills, learning to assess complex arguments and philosophical texts systematically. The third year emphasizes independent research and contemporary applications, with modules exploring knowledge and doubt from antiquity to the digital age, modern philosophical issues, concepts of good and evil, political communication, and gender and sexuality studies. The Philosophy Research Project allows students to investigate a topic of personal interest in depth, honing research, communication, and presentation skills. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to reflect critically, engage in debate, and apply philosophical frameworks to real-world problems. Graduates are prepared for careers that value analytical reasoning, ethical judgment, and effective communication, including education, law, journalism, public policy, and other fields requiring intellectual rigor.
