COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy and English Literature degree at ARU provides an interdisciplinary study that combines philosophical inquiry with literary analysis, enabling students to explore fundamental questions about human existence, knowledge, and morality through both philosophical texts and literary works. In the first year, students are introduced to the world religions, critical reading, literary history from Old English to the Enlightenment, and foundational philosophical questions, establishing a broad intellectual base. The second year deepens this engagement with modules covering ethics, the philosophy of art, Renaissance literature, science fiction, and modern critical social thought, alongside opportunities to explore adaptations, film criticism, and performance. Students also undertake a Ruskin module and language studies to enhance research and communication skills. The final year focuses on specialized research, including a Philosophy Research Project and an Undergraduate Major Project in English, alongside modules in Renaissance drama, concepts of good and evil, nature and the absolute, poetry, and literary and philosophical perspectives on historical and contemporary culture. Through this combination, students develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and interpretive skills, as well as the ability to connect philosophical concepts with literary creativity. Graduates gain transferable skills suitable for careers in education, publishing, media, law, public policy, or any field requiring sophisticated critical, research, and communication abilities.
