COURSE CURRICULUM

The Liberal Arts degree at ARU offers a broad, interdisciplinary exploration of contemporary and historical issues, combining studies in literature, philosophy, sociology, politics, and media. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Introduction to the Study of Literature and Writing, A History of Now, Language, Communication and Society, and Introduction to Philosophy: The Big Questions, supported by the Into ARU module which facilitates transition into higher education. Year 2 expands the curriculum with a diverse selection of modules, including international relations, migration, social thought, health inequalities, violence, and popular culture, alongside options in digital media, professional placement, and language development. Students are encouraged to engage critically with contemporary debates, examine global perspectives, and understand the social, political, and cultural forces shaping modern society. In the final year, the focus shifts to advanced research and practical application, with a Major Project, Research Communication, and modules covering media, global feminism, welfare history, cultural politics, literature and exile, gender and sexuality, philosophy, environmental issues, and global governance. Optional modules allow students to tailor their learning to individual interests while developing research, analytical, and communication skills. Overall, the program cultivates a nuanced understanding of complex societal challenges, preparing graduates to think critically, adapt flexibly, and contribute meaningfully in diverse professional and academic contexts.
