COURSE CURRICULUM

This Film degree combines theoretical study with practical filmmaking experience, progressing from core concepts to advanced specialisms. In the first year, students explore the fundamentals of film language, creative moving image, and short film screenwriting, alongside studying the history of global cinema. Practical skills are developed through optional modules such as Super 8mm filmmaking, while the Into ARU module supports academic transition. The second year deepens theoretical understanding with modules on spectatorship, classical Hollywood cinema, and documentary film theory, complemented by the Ruskin Module. Students refine their practical abilities through options like 16mm filmmaking, non-fiction filmmaking, and script-to-screen projects, with further choices in independent cinema, film criticism, and reviewing. In the final year, the focus shifts to advanced topics and professional practice, including special topics in film studies and the Creative Industries Major Project. Optional modules allow students to tailor their expertise, from feature film screenwriting and experimental filmmaking to screen drama production, film journalism, and exploring gender or narrative in global cinema. Across all stages, the course blends analytical, creative, and technical skills, preparing graduates for diverse careers in film production, screenwriting, criticism, and related creative industries.
