COURSE CURRICULUM

This Film and Media degree integrates theoretical study with practical creative production, progressing from foundational skills to advanced specialisms. In the first year, students develop an understanding of film language, creative moving image, and screen media, while exploring media theory through modules like interMEDIAcy. Practical skills are introduced through optional Super 8mm filmmaking, supported by the Into ARU module for academic development. The second year builds on this foundation with modules such as Online Journalism, Exploded Screen, Digital Media Theory, and Cult Media, encouraging critical engagement with contemporary media cultures. Students can further refine their skills through practical options including 16mm filmmaking, documentary theory, non-fiction filmmaking, photography, animation, and script-to-screen projects. The final year focuses on professional practice and advanced topics, anchored by the Creative Industries Major Project. Core study of the cultural politics of celebrity is complemented by a wide range of optional modules, such as screen drama production, experimental film, feature film screenwriting, independent film practice, television studies, gender and popular cinema, film journalism, and global narrative cinema. Throughout the course, students combine critical analysis with technical expertise, gaining the creative, analytical, and production skills needed for diverse roles in film, media, and digital industries.
