COURSE CURRICULUM

The English degree offers a comprehensive study of language, literature, and communication, progressing from foundational skills to advanced specialisms. In Year 1, students explore literary forms and critical approaches through modules such as How Texts Work, Introduction to the Study of Literature and Writing, Deconstructing Communication, Language, Communication and Society, and The History of the Novel, alongside the Into ARU program. Year 2 builds on this foundation with core modules including Bridging Cultures, Woke Wars, and From Modernism to the Millennium, while offering a wide range of optional topics such as Nineteenth Century Literature, Science Fiction, Performing Shakespeare, Digital Media Theory, and Writing Short Fiction. Opportunities for professional placement and interdisciplinary study are also available, including the Ruskin Module and Anglia Language program. In Year 3, students focus on critical and applied perspectives through Prejudice and Ideologies, Research Communication, and a Major Project, alongside optional modules such as The Cultural Politics of Celebrity, Crime and Detective Fiction, Literature and Exile, Writing Poetry, Language and the Law, and Digital Methods. Throughout the degree, students develop strong analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in media, publishing, education, cultural industries, or further academic study, with the flexibility to specialise in areas of personal interest.
