COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language and Communication degree combines the study of language, communication, and social context, progressing from core foundations to advanced specialisms. In Year 1, students explore the principles of language and meaning through modules such as Psychology of Communication, Deconstructing Communication, How Texts Work, Language, Communication and Society, and Psychology of Language, alongside the Into ARU program. Year 2 develops analytical and research skills with modules like Bridging Cultures, Digital Stylistics, and Researching Society and Culture, supported by the Ruskin Module. A wide range of optional modules, including Woke Wars, Digital Media Theory, Online Journalism, Podcasting, and Sounds and Communication, allow students to tailor their studies and gain practical experience, with opportunities for a professional placement. In Year 3, students complete the Undergraduate Major Project in English Language and Linguistics, alongside core modules in New Media Discourse and Research Communication. Optional choices include Communication Disorders, Political Communication, Race and Ethnic Identity, Language and the Law, The Cultural Politics of Celebrity, and Digital Methods. Throughout the course, students develop strong critical thinking, research, and communication skills, preparing for careers in media, public relations, education, policy, or research, as well as further academic study in language, linguistics, and communication-related fields.
