COURSE CURRICULUM

The Drama and English Literature undergraduate program offers a three-year, interdisciplinary study that combines practical performance skills with in-depth literary analysis. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules in acting fundamentals, researching performance, reading critically from Old English to the Enlightenment, studio projects, and an introduction to literature and writing, supported by the Into ARU module. The second year expands practical and theoretical expertise with courses in nineteenth-century literature adaptations, making performance, community theatre, and various specialized modules such as physical theatre, performing Shakespeare, new writing, science fiction, and dramatherapy, alongside the Ruskin Module and the Anglia Language program to enhance academic and language development. Students gain hands-on experience in performance, production, and research-based practice, exploring both classical and contemporary drama. In the final year, students consolidate their skills and knowledge through major projects in performance and English, while exploring advanced topics including Renaissance drama, Elizabeth Gaskell and the Brontës, romantic literature, site-specific and immersive theatre, screen drama production, literature and exile, and new media discourse. The program emphasizes creative practice, critical thinking, and professional development, preparing graduates for careers in theatre, performance, literary analysis, education, and creative industries. By combining rigorous literary study with practical performance experience, students graduate as versatile practitioners capable of engaging with literature and drama in both scholarly and professional contexts.
