COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology and Sociology program is structured over three years to provide a broad and in-depth understanding of crime, justice and social issues. In the first year, students are introduced to key contemporary issues in criminology, the criminal justice system in England and Wales, and the practical application of sociology to real-world contexts. They also explore the relationship between media, society and crime, as well as global affairs, while developing essential academic skills. The second year deepens sociological and criminological analysis through the study of migration, education and research methods, alongside a wide range of optional modules that allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests. These include topics such as cybercrime and policing, intoxicants and crime, punishment and rehabilitation, violence and victimisation, religion and crime, health inequalities, youth work and safeguarding, and historical and contemporary approaches to crime and punishment. In the final year, students undertake an undergraduate major project and explore advanced topics such as race and ethnicity, policing in policy and practice, organised crime, counter-terrorism, global criminal justice, investigative psychology, exploitation and trafficking, youth crime, crime and data science, and the social control of sexuality. Overall, the program develops strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills, preparing graduates for careers in criminal justice, social research, policy and public services.
