COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Youth Justice at Aberystwyth University combines theoretical knowledge, research skills, and practical understanding to prepare students for advanced study and professional roles in youth justice. Core modules include Critical Youth Justice, which examines contemporary debates and challenges in youth justice policy and practice, and Designing Criminological Research, which equips students with the skills to plan, develop, and conduct rigorous research projects. Students also study International Comparative Youth Justice, enabling them to evaluate youth justice systems in other jurisdictions and draw comparative insights. Training in qualitative and quantitative research methods, through modules such as Qualitative Data Collection and Analysis and Quantitative Data Collection and Analysis for social scientists, ensures that graduates can analyse complex data and critically evaluate evidence. The Dissertation provides an opportunity to undertake an independent research project, applying both theoretical frameworks and methodological skills to a topic of choice within youth justice. Optional modules, including Criminological Theory and Perspectives, International Criminal Law, and International Humanitarian Law, allow students to broaden their understanding of the wider legal and criminological context. This combination of critical analysis, methodological training, and applied research ensures that graduates are well-prepared for careers in youth justice policy, social research, advocacy, or further academic study, with the ability to influence practice and contribute to reform initiatives.
