COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Livestock Science at Aberystwyth University is structured around core and optional modules that provide a comprehensive education in livestock biology, production, and management. Core modules focus on essential scientific and practical knowledge required to excel in the livestock industry. Animal Breeding and Genetics covers the principles of selective breeding and genetic improvement, while Grassland Science explores pasture management and its role in sustainable livestock production. Infection and Immunity provides students with an understanding of animal health and disease control, and Livestock Nutrition examines dietary requirements and strategies for optimizing animal growth and productivity. Livestock Production Science integrates these disciplines to offer a holistic view of modern livestock systems, and the Dissertation allows students to undertake an extended research project, applying scientific methods to a topic of their choice and demonstrating critical analysis and problem-solving skills. Optional modules provide further specialization and practical experience, including Field and Laboratory Techniques, Frontiers in the Biosciences, Hot Topics in Parasite Control, and Statistical Concepts, Methods and Tools. Collectively, these modules equip students with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research experience necessary to pursue careers in livestock production, consultancy, research, or education, while preparing them to address contemporary challenges in food security, sustainability, and animal welfare in the global livestock sector.
