COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Society and Space at Aberystwyth University combines core and optional modules to provide a comprehensive understanding of spatially-informed social science, equipping students with advanced theoretical knowledge and practical research skills. Core modules include Key Concepts and Debates in the Study of Society and Space, which introduces foundational ideas and critical debates in the field, and Theory in Society and Space, which explores major theoretical frameworks for understanding social and spatial dynamics. Principles of Research Design prepares students to structure and plan robust social research projects, while Qualitative Data Collection and Analysis and Quantitative Data Collection and Analysis for social scientists equip them with essential methodological skills for gathering, interpreting, and evaluating data. The MA Dissertation allows students to undertake an independent research project, applying theory and methods to a topic of their own choosing. Optional modules offer the flexibility to tailor learning to individual interests, covering subjects such as Behaviour Change in a Changing Environment, Class and Community in Wales 1850–1939, Concepts and Sources in Heritage Studies, Ecocriticism and Ecocinema, Indigenous Politics, International Politics, Representations of the Holocaust 1945–2020, Science, Place and Victorian Culture, Social Bodies, and The Making of Wales. Together, these modules provide a rigorous and interdisciplinary foundation, preparing graduates for careers in research, policy, planning, social analysis, and related fields, or for further postgraduate study.
