COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Modern History at Aberystwyth University combines core and optional modules to provide a comprehensive and flexible study of modern historical developments from the early 19th century to the present. Core modules include Key Themes in Modern History, which offers an overview of major political, social, cultural, and diplomatic trends, Research Methods and Professional Skills in History, which equips students with essential methodologies and techniques for conducting historical research, and the Dissertation, where students undertake an independent research project, demonstrating their ability to analyse primary and secondary sources, construct coherent arguments, and engage critically with scholarly debates. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests and broaden their expertise, covering topics such as Information and Society, Sources for Postgraduate Research in the Modern Humanities and Social Sciences, Borders and Borderlands in Modern Asia, Class and Community in Wales 1850-1939, Concepts and Sources in Heritage Studies, Gerald of Wales, Representations of the Holocaust 1945-2020, Science, Place and Victorian Culture, The Making of Wales, and Working with History. Together, these modules develop a strong foundation in historical knowledge, research skills, and critical analysis, preparing graduates for careers in academia, heritage, public history, education, research, and related professional fields, while also providing a pathway for further postgraduate study.
