COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Medieval Britain and Europe at Aberystwyth University combines core and optional modules to provide a comprehensive and flexible study of medieval history within both British and European contexts. Core modules focus on developing essential research skills, language proficiency, and subject knowledge. The Dissertation enables students to undertake an extended research project, demonstrating their ability to conduct independent scholarship and analyse primary and secondary sources critically. Latin for Postgraduate Study and Texts that Made the Middle Ages provide intensive training in Latin, equipping students with the skills to read and interpret original manuscripts and historical documents. Medieval and Post-Medieval Palaeography and Diplomatic develops expertise in understanding historical scripts, charters, and archival materials, while England in Context in the Long Thirteenth Century explores the political, social, economic, and cultural developments of the period. Research Methods and Professional Skills in History provides methodological training, preparing students for academic research and professional historical work. Optional modules allow learners to tailor their studies according to specific interests, including topics such as Borders and Borderlands in Modern Asia, Class and Community in Wales 1850-1939, Gerald of Wales, Representations of the Holocaust 1945-2020, Science, Place and Victorian Culture, and Working with History. Together, these modules provide a rigorous foundation in medieval history, advanced research skills, and practical expertise in language and palaeography, preparing graduates for careers in research, heritage, archives, museums, and further academic study.
