COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA History and Heritage at Aberystwyth University combines core and optional modules to provide a comprehensive understanding of historical and heritage studies while developing practical skills for professional practice. Core modules focus on building strong research and methodological foundations. Concepts and Sources in Heritage Studies introduces key theories, debates and approaches in heritage scholarship, while Working with History encourages the practical application of historical knowledge in contemporary contexts. Research Methods and Professional Skills in History equips students with essential academic, analytical and professional tools, supporting both independent research and career development. The dissertation serves as a major research project, allowing students to apply these skills to a topic of their choice and demonstrate mastery of both historical research and heritage practice. Optional modules offer opportunities to specialise and explore diverse historical periods, regions and themes, including borders and borderlands in modern Asia, class and community in Wales, Gerald of Wales, post-medieval palaeography, rare books and special collections, representations of the Holocaust, and the intersection of science, place and Victorian culture. Additional modules, such as Sources for Postgraduate Research in the Modern Humanities and Social Sciences and Information and Society, provide practical research tools and critical perspectives. Together, the combination of core and optional modules ensures a balanced program that blends theoretical insight, practical experience and specialised knowledge, preparing graduates for careers in heritage, museums, archives, conservation or advanced academic research.
