COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Creative Writing combines core creative development with a rich selection of literary and professional options. The core modules centre on practical and scholarly engagement with writing. Writer as Practitioner 1 and Writer as Practitioner 2 guide students through the development of their own creative work, encouraging experimentation, refinement of technique and the production of a substantial portfolio. Writer as Scholar introduces the study of writing from a critical and academic perspective, helping students understand how literary analysis can inform and strengthen creative practice. The optional modules allow students to shape the degree according to their interests, offering a wide range of thematic, historical and genre-based studies. Options include contemporary poetry, postwar American fiction, queer writing, Romantic radical cultures, disability representation, women’s fiction, and major texts such as Joyce’s *Ulysses*. Modules like Literature and Human Rights or Poetry After Darwin broaden literary understanding through cultural and scientific lenses, while Research and Project Planning supports students preparing for extended creative or academic work. Writer as Professional offers insight into the publishing world and professional writing careers. Together, these modules provide a flexible and intellectually stimulating structure that deepens both creative skill and literary knowledge.
