COURSE CURRICULUM

The LLM Law program at Aberystwyth University is structured around core and optional modules that allow students to develop a personalised and in-depth understanding of contemporary legal issues. The core modules, Legal Studies and the Dissertation, provide a strong foundation in legal research, analysis, and academic writing while enabling students to undertake an independent project on a topic of their choice. The dissertation allows learners to apply theoretical knowledge to practical or scholarly legal problems, demonstrating critical thinking, legal reasoning, and the ability to conduct rigorous research. Optional modules offer a broad range of specialisms, including Aspects of Commercial Contracting, International Commercial Law, International Trade Law, and International Criminal Law, allowing students to explore the legal frameworks governing business, commerce, and criminal justice on a global scale. Modules in International Environmental Law, International Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law, Law and Gender, and Migration and Asylum Law provide opportunities to engage with social, ethical, and humanitarian dimensions of law. The Negotiated Study Module offers flexibility for students to pursue bespoke areas of interest. Together, the combination of core and optional modules equips graduates with advanced expertise, analytical skills, and practical knowledge, preparing them for careers in law firms, government, international organisations, corporate legal departments, or further academic research in specialised legal fields.
