COURSE CURRICULUM

The LLM in Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at Aberystwyth University combines core and optional modules to provide a comprehensive and flexible program of study in international law. The core modules, Legal Studies and the Dissertation, establish a strong foundation in legal research, analysis and writing while enabling students to undertake an in-depth independent project on a topic of their choice. The dissertation allows learners to apply critical thinking and legal reasoning to contemporary human rights or humanitarian law issues, demonstrating mastery of both theory and practice. A wide range of optional modules enables students to tailor the program to their interests and career goals. Options include International Criminal Law, International Human Rights Law, and International Humanitarian Law, which explore the protection of individuals and the regulation of armed conflicts in global contexts. Other modules, such as Law and Gender, Migration and Asylum Law, and International Environmental Law, address the intersections of law with social, political and environmental concerns. Commercial and trade law options, including Aspects of Commercial Contracting, International Commercial Law, and International Trade Law, provide insight into the legal frameworks governing business and economic relations. Additional modules, such as Criminological Theory and Perspectives, Understanding and Investigating Serious Crime, and Negotiated Study Modules, offer further flexibility and interdisciplinary perspectives. Together, these modules equip graduates with the knowledge, analytical skills and practical experience necessary for careers in international law, humanitarian organisations, NGOs, government, or further academic research.
