COURSE CURRICULUM

The LLB Criminal Law degree at Aberystwyth University offers a comprehensive program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of criminal law. In the first year, students study core modules such as contract law, criminal law, public law, tort, and legal skills and research, alongside an introduction to legal and criminal justice systems. These modules develop essential skills in analysis, research, and argumentation while providing a grounding in the fundamentals of law. In the second year, students progress to core subjects including equity and trusts, European law, and land law, with the opportunity to choose from a range of optional modules tailored to specific interests, such as commercial law, international law, humanitarian law, family and child law, and the psychology of criminal behaviour. The third year focuses on advanced study, including a dissertation in law and criminology, and further optional modules that allow students to specialise in areas such as criminal law and practice, advocacy skills, dispute resolution, sports law, and treatment and rehabilitation of offenders. Throughout the degree, students develop a thorough understanding of criminal law, the justice system, and associated legal practices, equipping them for careers as solicitors, barristers, and roles within policing, probation, and the prison service, as well as providing a foundation for further study in law and criminology.
