COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Zoology degree at Aberystwyth University is structured over three years, combining core and optional modules to provide a comprehensive understanding of animal biology, ecology, and conservation. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules in cell biology, comparative animal physiology, ecology and conservation, genetics, evolution and diversity, microbial and plant diversity, and practical skills for wildlife scientists. This provides a strong scientific and practical base for advanced study. The second year focuses on specialist zoological topics, including vertebrate and invertebrate zoology, and research methods, while optional modules allow students to explore animal behaviour, evolution and molecular systematics, freshwater and marine biology, behavioural ecology, tropical zoology, veterinary health, and wildlife surveying. This combination of core and optional modules enables students to tailor their studies to their interests while gaining applied experience. In the third year, students undertake an independent research project, developing advanced research and analytical skills. Optional modules in the final year include animal behaviour fieldwork, behavioural neurobiology, freshwater and marine biology field courses, parasitology, primatology, wildlife conservation, global biodiversity conservation, and the behaviour and welfare of domesticated animals. Overall, the degree integrates theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and field-based experience, preparing graduates for careers in zoological research, wildlife management, conservation, and related scientific fields, or for further postgraduate study.
