COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Sociology program at Aberystwyth University is structured across three years, combining core modules with optional courses that allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests. In the first year, students build a foundational understanding of sociology through core modules covering key concepts, sociological thinking, place and identity, and an introduction to sociological research. Optional modules offer interdisciplinary perspectives, including psychology, media studies, globalization, and urban conflict, providing opportunities to explore social phenomena from multiple angles. The second year deepens research skills and theoretical knowledge, with core modules focusing on sociological theory, research in the field, gender and sexuality, and consolidating research abilities. Students can further broaden their understanding through optional modules in comparative politics and culture. In the final year, students engage with advanced topics and independent research, completing a substantial dissertation while exploring everyday social worlds. Optional modules in the third year allow study of specialized areas such as gender and media, heritage and memory cultures, urban risk and resilience, and the sociopolitical dimensions of nation and space. Overall, the program combines theoretical learning, practical research training, and interdisciplinary exploration, equipping students with the analytical, critical, and empirical skills necessary to understand, interpret, and address the complexities of contemporary society.
