COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Sociology and Politics degree at Aberystwyth University is structured over three years, combining core modules with a wide range of optional courses that allow students to tailor their studies. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in both disciplines, studying key sociological concepts, research methods, and ways of thinking sociologically, alongside core political topics such as contemporary politics and international concepts. This year establishes the analytical and research skills necessary for more advanced study. In the second year, students deepen their sociological understanding through modules on theory, field research, and gender and sexuality, while exploring comparative politics and a variety of specialized options in international relations, diplomacy, conflict, security, and global development. This allows students to connect sociological perspectives with political analysis and global contexts. The third year focuses on advanced sociological and political studies, including a substantial sociology dissertation and the module on everyday social worlds. Optional modules provide opportunities to study topics such as warfare, intelligence, nuclear strategy, EU simulation, capitalism, human rights, nationalism, and gender in global development, enabling students to explore their specific interests in depth. Overall, the program integrates theoretical knowledge, practical research experience, and interdisciplinary exploration, equipping graduates with the analytical, critical, and empirical skills required to understand and engage with complex social and political issues.
