COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Psychology with Counselling degree at Aberystwyth University is designed to integrate core psychological theory with practical counselling skills, preparing students for careers in mental health, therapy, and applied psychology. In the first year, students build a foundation in psychology, studying brain, behaviour, and cognition, conceptual and historical issues in psychology, and research methods, while also being introduced to the fundamentals of counselling, including theory and practical skills. The program emphasizes personal development and the application of psychological knowledge to social and individual behaviour. In the second year, students advance their understanding of cognitive and social psychology while developing further counselling skills and theory through a structured course. Optional modules allow exploration of specialised areas such as forensic psychology, health psychology, and language and behaviour. In the third year, students undertake advanced studies in behavioural neuroscience and developmental psychology while completing a counselling-focused research project. Additional options provide opportunities to engage with applied topics such as psychotherapeutic practice with couples, psychology in practice, and the psychology of ageing, humour, and personhood.
