COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Psychology and Sociology degree at Aberystwyth University combines the study of psychological and sociological principles to provide a comprehensive understanding of human behaviour in both individual and social contexts. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in brain, behaviour, and cognition, core psychological research methods, social and individual behaviour, and key sociological concepts, while exploring themes of place and identity and thinking sociologically. The second year builds on this foundation with modules in cognitive psychology, social psychology, qualitative and quantitative research methods, sociological theory, and the study of genders and sexualities, allowing students to examine the intersections of individual psychology and broader social structures. Optional modules such as Placing Culture and Placing Politics enable students to explore the social, cultural, and political dimensions of society. In the final year, students engage with advanced topics, including behavioural neuroscience, developmental psychology, and everyday social worlds, alongside a research project designed for joint honours students. Additional options such as Landscape, Culture and Society in 20th Century Britain, Memory Cultures, Nation, Society and Space, The Psychosocial Century, and Urban Risk and Environmental Resilience provide opportunities for in-depth exploration of contemporary and historical social issues. This interdisciplinary approach equips students with critical thinking, analytical skills, and research expertise applicable to careers in social research, community work, mental health, and public policy, while also preparing them for postgraduate study.
