COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Physics degree at Aberystwyth University offers a comprehensive and structured program that builds a strong foundation in both theoretical and experimental physics while developing practical and analytical skills. In the first year, students study essential topics such as algebra and differential equations, calculus, dynamics, waves and heat, electricity, magnetism and matter, and modern physics, along with hands-on laboratory techniques to develop experimental proficiency. Optional modules such as astronomy, energy and the environment, and communication and technology allow students to explore additional areas of interest. In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced concepts, including electricity and magnetism, mathematical physics, thermodynamics, optics, principles of quantum mechanics, sensors, electronics and instrumentation, numerical techniques, and practical research skills. These modules strengthen students’ understanding of physical laws and provide experience in applying mathematics and computational methods to complex problems. In the final year, students engage with specialized areas such as condensed matter physics, lasers and photonics, materials physics, particles, quanta and fields, and semiconductor technology, while completing a substantial research project. Throughout the degree, students gain critical thinking, problem-solving, and experimental skills, equipping them for careers in physics, engineering, technology, and research, or further academic study in the physical sciences.
