COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Physical Geography degree at Aberystwyth University provides a comprehensive understanding of the physical processes that shape Earth’s landscapes and environments. In the first year, students study fundamental concepts including Earth materials, surface environments, planetary formation, life on Earth, natural hazards, and research skills with a focus on data collection and analysis. In the second year, the course builds on this foundation with modules covering glacial and fluvial processes, Quaternary environmental change, geoscience laboratory techniques, research design, and the visualisation and analysis of geographical data. Students can also choose optional modules in environmental geochemistry, geoscience for sustainable development, and societal sustainability, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests. In the final year, students complete a dissertation that integrates geography, environmental science, and earth science, demonstrating their research capabilities and analytical skills. Additional options in the third year include applied environmental management, biogeochemistry and health, debates in climate science, glaciers and ice sheets, monitoring the planet from space, and volcanic hazards and environmental change. The program combines theoretical knowledge with practical fieldwork, laboratory experience, and data analysis, equipping graduates with skills in research, problem-solving, and environmental assessment. Accreditation by the Royal Geographical Society ensures students are prepared for careers in environmental consultancy, management, conservation, and further study in geography or earth sciences.
