COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Microbiology degree at Aberystwyth University is a comprehensive three-year program that provides a deep understanding of microorganisms and their impact on health, disease, and the environment. In the first year, students are introduced to core biological principles through modules such as Cell Biology, Ecology and Conservation, Genetics, Evolution and Diversity, and Microbial and Plant Diversity. Core modules include Environmental Microbiology and Monitoring, which examines the role of microbes in ecosystems, and One Health Microbiology, which explores the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Practical and Professional Skills in Microbiology and Research Methods prepare students for scientific research and careers in microbiology. Optional modules such as Applied Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics, Cell and Cancer Biology, Immunology, and Proteins and Enzymes offer further specialization in areas related to molecular biology, disease, and immune response.The final year emphasizes advanced knowledge and research. Core modules include Microbial Pathogenesis, which explores how microbes cause disease, and Biotechnology, which covers the use of microorganisms in industrial and medical applications. A significant component is the Research Project, where students independently investigate a microbiological topic of their choice. Optional modules such as Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics, Molecular Pharmacology, Terrestrial Ecology Fieldcourse, and Veterinary Infectious Diseases allow students to align their studies with specific career goals or research interests.
