COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Mathematics program at Aberystwyth University provides a comprehensive and structured study of both pure and applied mathematics, equipping students with analytical, problem-solving, and logical reasoning skills that are highly valued across multiple sectors. In the first year, students gain a strong foundation in core subjects including algebra, calculus, differential equations, coordinate and vector geometry, mathematical analysis, probability, and statistics, along with career planning and mathematical skills development. The second year builds on this foundation with modules in mathematical physics, applied statistics, complex analysis, linear algebra, and numerical analysis, while offering optional modules such as advanced dynamics, hydrodynamics, distributions and estimation, real analysis, and abstract algebra to allow for deeper exploration in areas of interest. In the third year, students can specialise further through a broad range of optional modules including asymptotic methods in mechanics, differential geometry of curves and surfaces, graphs and networks, group theory, hydrodynamics II, information theory, norms and differential equations, numerical solutions of partial differential equations, operator algebra, probability and stochastic processes, project work in mathematics or statistics, spectral theory, statistical inference and linear models, stochastic models in finance, theory of elasticity, and topics in biological statistics. The program emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical application, preparing students for careers in mathematics, data analysis, finance, research, engineering, and related fields, while fostering advanced analytical thinking and numerical competence.
