The Mathematics and Economics degree at Aberystwyth University is a structured three-year program that integrates the theoretical foundations and practical applications of both disciplines. In the first year, students build a strong mathematical base through modules such as Algebra, Calculus, Further Algebra and Calculus, Mathematical Analysis, Probability, and Statistics. These are complemented by core economics modules including Economic Theory and Policy, Data Analytics, and Understanding the Economy, which introduce key concepts in macroeconomics, microeconomics, and the use of data in economic analysis.The second year deepens students’ understanding of both subjects. Core modules include Complex Analysis and Linear Algebra, which develop advanced mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills. On the economics side, students explore Macroeconomics and Microeconomics in greater depth, focusing on theoretical models and real-world policy applications. Optional modules offer the opportunity to tailor the course to individual interests and career goals, with choices including Applied Statistics, Distributions and Estimation, Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Econometrics, and Managerial Economics. These modules strengthen the analytical and quantitative skills essential for careers in finance, data analysis, and economic research.In the final year, the focus shifts to applying economic principles to contemporary issues and global development challenges. Core modules include Contemporary Issues in Economics and Policy, and Growth, Development and Sustainability. Students can also select from optional modules such as Environmental Economics and the History of Economic Thought to broaden their understanding of current debates and historical perspectives in economics. This program equips graduates with a solid foundation in mathematics and economics, preparing them for a wide range of careers in finance, government, policy analysis, and academia, or for further postgraduate study in either discipline.
