COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Mathematical Modelling degree at Aberystwyth University provides students with a comprehensive foundation in mathematics and its applications to real-world problems. In the first year, students study core modules including algebra, calculus, coordinate and vector geometry, differential equations, further algebra and calculus, mathematical analysis, probability, and statistics, alongside career planning and mathematical skills development. These modules equip students with essential analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills. In the second year, the program builds on this foundation with advanced topics such as mathematical physics, advanced dynamics, applied statistics, complex analysis, distributions and estimation, hydrodynamics, numerical analysis, and linear algebra, with options to study abstract algebra or real analysis, allowing students to tailor their learning to specific interests. The third year offers further specialisation through optional modules including asymptotic methods in mechanics, information theory, norms and differential equations, numerical solutions of partial differential equations, partial differential equations, probability and stochastic processes, statistical inference and linear models, theory of elasticity, and topics in biological statistics. Across all three years, the degree develops students’ ability to apply mathematical and statistical techniques to model and analyse complex systems. Graduates emerge with strong analytical reasoning, computational proficiency, and versatile skills, preparing them for careers in science, engineering, technology, finance, and research, with the added recognition of accreditation by the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications.
