COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Mathematical and Theoretical Physics degree at Aberystwyth University combines advanced mathematics with theoretical physics to provide a rigorous understanding of the fundamental principles underlying the physical world. In the first year, students study core mathematical modules including algebra, calculus, coordinate and vector geometry, differential equations, further algebra and calculus, mathematical analysis, probability, and statistics, alongside foundational physics modules covering dynamics, waves, heat, and modern physics. Optional modules such as energy and the environment and laboratory techniques introduce applied aspects of the discipline. In the second year, the program advances to more specialised mathematical and physical concepts, including complex analysis, linear algebra, real analysis, distributions and estimation, introduction to abstract algebra, mathematical physics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, and principles of quantum mechanics, with options in advanced dynamics and hydrodynamics. The third year focuses on higher-level theoretical and mathematical physics topics, such as particles, quanta and fields, group theory, norms and differential equations, partial differential equations, and probability and stochastic processes. Throughout the degree, students develop strong analytical, problem-solving, and computational skills, learning to apply mathematical reasoning to complex physical systems. The program equips graduates with highly transferable skills suitable for careers in research, engineering, data analysis, finance, and other mathematically and scientifically demanding fields, and is accredited by the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications.
