COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Marine and Freshwater Biology degree at Aberystwyth University offers a structured three-year program that combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills to provide a comprehensive understanding of aquatic ecosystems. In the first year, students build a foundation in cell biology, comparative animal physiology, ecology and conservation, genetics, evolution and diversity, microbial and plant diversity, and essential skills for wildlife scientists. This grounding allows students to develop a strong understanding of the principles that underpin marine and freshwater biology. In the second year, the course focuses on aquatic and marine biology, freshwater biology, aquatic botany, and research methods, with options including animal behaviour, environmental microbiology, invertebrate and vertebrate zoology, GIS and landscape ecology, and behavioural ecology research, enabling students to specialise and deepen their practical and analytical expertise. The third year consolidates learning through advanced modules in fish biology, fisheries and aquaculture, practical aquatic conservation, and a substantial research project, complemented by optional field courses in marine and freshwater biology, population and community ecology, behavioural neurobiology, wildlife conservation, and global biodiversity conservation. Across the program, students gain hands-on experience in fieldwork, laboratory techniques, and ecological research, preparing them for careers in marine and freshwater ecology, conservation, environmental management, and scientific research, with the knowledge and skills to address challenges facing aquatic ecosystems.
