COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biomedical Science degree at Aberystwyth University provides a comprehensive understanding of human biology, disease, and the scientific techniques used to investigate them. In the first year, students build a solid foundation in core subjects including biological chemistry, cell biology, genetics, evolution, human physiological systems, microbial diversity, and essential practical skills for biologists. This grounding equips students with the knowledge and laboratory competencies required for more advanced study. In the second year, the curriculum expands into specialized areas such as cell and cancer biology, haematology and pathobiology, immunology, and One Health microbiology, alongside modules focused on translating laboratory research into clinical practice and developing research methods. These studies enhance students’ understanding of the integration of theory and practical application in biomedical science. The final year emphasizes advanced topics and independent research, with modules in bioinformatics, functional genomics, microbial pathogenesis, and molecular pharmacology, culminating in a self-directed research project. This project allows students to explore a chosen area in depth, develop critical thinking, experimental design, and analytical skills, and gain experience in presenting scientific findings. Graduates leave with a strong combination of theoretical knowledge, practical expertise, and research experience, preparing them for careers in healthcare, research, industry, or further postgraduate study.
