COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biochemistry degree at Aberystwyth University provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the molecular and cellular processes that underpin life, with a strong emphasis on practical skills and professional readiness. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in biological chemistry, cell biology, comparative animal physiology, genetics, and evolution, alongside essential skills for biologists, with optional modules in microbial and plant diversity. The second year builds on this foundation, focusing on applied molecular biology, bioinformatics, cell and cancer biology, proteins and enzymes, and practical skills for biochemists, supported by research methods training. Optional modules in immunology, chromosome dynamics, evolution, microbiology, and professional microbiology skills allow students to tailor their learning to their interests. In the third year, students undertake advanced study in bioinformatics, functional genomics, biotechnology, and molecular pharmacology, culminating in an independent research project that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory experience. Additional options in microbial pathogenesis and molecular biology of development enable further specialization.
