COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Applied Mathematics or Pure Mathematics degree at Aberystwyth University is designed to provide a comprehensive and rigorous education in mathematical theory and its practical applications. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules covering algebra, calculus, differential equations, coordinate and vector geometry, further algebra and calculus, mathematical analysis, probability, statistics, and career planning with mathematical skills development. This first-year curriculum ensures students develop essential analytical and problem-solving abilities while preparing them for more advanced study. In the second year, the focus shifts to higher-level topics such as advanced dynamics, applied statistics, complex analysis, hydrodynamics, abstract algebra, numerical analysis and its applications, linear algebra, real analysis, and mathematical physics. These modules deepen students’ understanding of mathematical structures, methods, and their applications in diverse scientific and engineering contexts. The final year allows students to specialise through optional modules, including asymptotic methods in mechanics, graphs and networks, group theory, norms and differential equations, operator algebra, and partial differential equations, enabling them to tailor their studies to specific interests or career paths. Throughout the degree, students develop logical reasoning, critical thinking, and quantitative problem-solving skills, equipping them for careers in mathematics, finance, engineering, data analysis, and technology, as well as for postgraduate study. The program is accredited by the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, supporting professional recognition and progression towards becoming a Chartered Mathematician.
