COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Animal Science degree at Aberystwyth University is a comprehensive program designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge and practical skills in the applied science of domesticated animals, including livestock, horses, and companion animals. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules in cell biology, disease diagnosis and control, domestic animal anatomy and physiology, genetics, evolution and diversity, introduction to livestock production, and specialised skills in equine exercise physiology. Year two advances these concepts with modules in animal breeding, applied nutrition for livestock, horses and companion animals, immunology, veterinary health, and research methods, while offering optional modules in animal behaviour, livestock production, and human, equine and canine exercise physiology, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests. The final year focuses on professional and research skills through a substantial research project alongside core modules in veterinary infectious diseases and pharmacology and disease control. Students can also choose from options such as behavioural neurobiology, welfare of domesticated animals, equine nutrition and stud management, livestock production science, and international animal health study tours. Throughout the degree, practical learning is integrated with theoretical study, using the university’s farms, equine centre, and research laboratories to develop professional competence and prepare graduates for careers in animal science, veterinary support, animal welfare, or further postgraduate study.
