COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Celtic Studies degree at Aberystwyth University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Celtic languages, literature, and culture through a structured progression of modules across four years. In the first year, students are introduced to the literature of Gaelic Ireland and the complex legacy of the Celts, which establishes a strong foundation in both historical and literary contexts. The second year allows students to build on their language skills with modern Irish language and literature modules, while also offering an introduction to Old Irish for those wishing to explore medieval texts and early linguistic forms. In the final years of the program, students have the opportunity to specialise further through optional modules such as comparative Celtic philology, which examines the relationships between different Celtic languages and their historical development. The degree encourages the study of Celtic languages and literature in both modern and medieval contexts, providing a balance between linguistic competence and cultural understanding. Some modules are available partially or entirely through the medium of Welsh, offering students flexibility and immersion in the language. Throughout the course, students develop research, critical thinking, and analytical skills, equipping them for careers in education, translation, heritage, and cultural research, as well as providing a strong foundation for further academic study in Celtic studies.
