COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Modern Languages degree at Aberystwyth University offers a structured progression through three years, enabling students to develop proficiency in up to three languages, including French, German, Italian, and Spanish. In the first year, students begin with beginner or non-beginner language modules depending on prior knowledge, alongside options that explore cultural and historical aspects, such as European film, Hispanic civilization, German cultural identity, and language, culture, and identity in Europe. This foundation integrates linguistic skills with cultural understanding and introduces research and study skills tailored to modern languages. In the second year, students advance to intermediate language modules while continuing to explore cultural, historical, and literary contexts through options including cinema, literature, national identity, and historical memory. Minor language options allow students to begin additional languages at a beginners’ level, fostering multilingual capabilities. In the third year, students consolidate their skills through advanced language modules, applying linguistic knowledge to a deeper understanding of cultural and societal issues. Optional modules cover topics such as advanced cinema studies, literature, gender, historical memory, and national identity, providing opportunities to specialize and tailor learning according to interests. The program culminates in a Year Abroad, where immersive experience in a country of study enhances language fluency, intercultural awareness, and practical communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in translation, international relations, education, business, and other global sectors.
