COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Medieval and Early Modern History degree at Aberystwyth University offers students a structured and comprehensive exploration of history from 1000 to 1800, with opportunities to study beyond this period through comparative and thematic modules. In the first year, students take core modules such as Introduction to History, alongside optional modules including Europe and the World 1000-2000, Medieval and Early Modern Britain and Europe, and thematic studies like People, Power and Identity in Wales. This foundation develops historical knowledge, critical thinking, and research skills. The second year builds on these skills with a core Making History module and a wide range of optional modules that allow students to explore diverse topics, from Famine in Medieval England and Victorian culture, to the European Reformation, modern Japan, and environmental history in Latin America and the Caribbean. Students can also examine political structures, kingship, and the impact of European and global events. In the final year, the focus is on independent research through a dissertation, complemented by optional modules covering areas such as coalfield history in Britain, Colombian Republican history, the English Reformation, Weimar Germany, and studies of social and cultural transformations. The degree equips students with strong analytical, research, and historiographical skills, preparing them for careers in education, heritage, research, and public history.
