COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Media and Communication Studies degree at Aberystwyth University combines theoretical understanding with practical media production across three years of study. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in communication and media studies while developing practical skills through modules such as Making Short Films and studying film, television, and media theory. They also have opportunities to explore topics like effective communication, media analysis, and historical perspectives on film and media. In the second year, students can expand their understanding of media and culture through optional modules including digital culture, media, politics and power, youth cultures, art cinema, creative documentary, creative studio practice, film stardom and celebrity, LGBT film and television, and work in the film and television industries. These options allow students to explore specific areas of interest and gain practical and analytical experience relevant to the media sector. The final year focuses on advanced topics and independent research, giving students the chance to specialise in areas such as gender and the media, contemporary film and television, experimental media production, videogame theories, media law and regulation, and documentary or experimental production projects. Throughout the degree, students develop critical, creative, and technical skills that prepare them for careers in media, communication, journalism, digital content, and related industries.
